AREA TEEN SELECTED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE FIRST TEE
LIFE SKILLS AND LEADERSHIP ACADEMY IN NEW YORK
[HAMILTON, OHIO (06/05/2012)] – Shayan Assani, 16, from The First Tee of Greater Miami Valley has been selected to attend The First Tee Life Skills and Leadership Academy July 25-31 on Long Island. Assani will join more than 90 other participants of The First Tee, ages 13-17, to participate in this national event.
"This really means a lot to me. It is a great opportunity to see New York and to learn skills that could help me later on in life. I am really looking forward to meeting new people and playing golf with them. Not only that, but this is the first time I'm traveling without parents! I am sure that this is going to help me somehow in the future."
For The First Tee of Greater Miami Valley, this is the fourth participant in its history to be selected for a national participant opportunity. “Shayan’s scholarship opportunity is the essence of what The First Tee® offers young participants. Everyone within The First Tee of Greater Miami Valley family is very proud of Shayan’s accomplishments,” said Brian Parkhurst, Executive Director of The First Tee of Greater Miami Valley.
The Academy, hosted by Nassau County, The First Tee of Metropolitan New York, Hofstra University and Eisenhower Park Golf Course, provides participants valuable character education and leadership instruction through interaction with more than 24 coaches. The week-long event will feature workshops, career exploration seminars, golf clinics and activities.
“We are excited to have the opportunity to host this year’s academy,” said Barry McLaughlin, executive director of The First Tee of Metropolitan New York. “This is the first time the event has been held at a municipal golf course. We are thankful to Nassau County and their patrons for allowing us the opportunity to use their facilities.”
The First Tee Life Skills and Leadership Academy is focused on recognizing and rewarding exceptional young adults for their accomplishments while teaching them valuable skills they can take back to their community. Most of all, the Academy teaches these young people that golf is much more than just a game. The First Tee is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of participants by providing them with the tools they need to be successful on and off the golf course.
